Aeris Gyro Octopus Review

Aeris Gyro Octopus

Since 1998 Aeris has been making high quality dive equipment. If you’re like me, you have a tendency to mistrust newcomers to the dive equipment game, but Aeris is one new company that won’t let you down.

Aeris built a reputation on offering little extras on their equipment that other manufacturers don’t. The result is top-of-the-line dive equipment and reasonable prices.

A great example of what I’m talking about is their Gyro Octopus.

Here’s some more information on this secondary second stage.

Aeris Gyro Octopus – Overview

I know what you’re thinking. “It’s just an octopus. How good can it be?”

You’re right. It’s just an octopus. It’s something that you never think about and that you’ll probably never use…probably.

The problem with cutting corners when you buy an octopus is that if you ever need it, it’ll probably be in a life or death emergency. What do you want to have in a life or death situation:

A cheap piece of crap or something that’s going to get you and your buddy to the surface alive?

The Aeris Gyro Octopus has several features that make it a great secondary second stage to have in an emergency.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

Aeris Gyro Octopus – Features

Aeris Gyro Octopus The Gyro Octopus is a small, streamlined secondary second stage that you’ll barely even realize you’re carrying. This octopus is hardly noticeable when you don’t need it but when you do, you’ll be happy it’s there.

One of the best features of the Gyro Octopus is that it works regardless of how it’s positioned. If you hand a traditional octo to your buddy upside down, they’ll get a big breath of water. However the Gyro Octopus will deliver a fresh breath of air no matter what position you put it in.

In addition, the front cover is high visibility so it’s easy to find in an emergency. The last thing you want is a panicked diver groping you and snatching the regulator out of your mouth when they can’t find your octopus.

There’s also an oversized purge button so your buddy can find it quickly to clear the water from the regulator before he or she takes a breath.

The Gyro Octopus also features a 180 degree swivel which makes sharing air easier if you ever find yourself in a situation that requires it.

Finally, the Gyro Octopus is Nitrox compatible up to a mixture of 40% making it the perfect octopus for Nitrox divers.

Aeris Gyro Octopus - Who Should Buy It?

All divers should have a redundant second stage. Even solo divers can benefit from one, since it provides a backup in case the primary second stage fails.

The Gyro Octopus is around $150, so it’s not the cheapest option when it comes to redundant second stages, but as my first instructor used to say: “Cheap dive equipment is a lot like cheap surgery. It might work out, but it’s more likely that you’re going to be very sorry you bought it.”

In an emergency, you want an octopus that will perform dependably and the Aeris Gyro Octopus won’t let you down.
