Apeks XTX40 Regulator Review
Apeks XTX40 review.
Ask any diver about the Apeks line of equipment and you’ll hear the same thing over and over again.
“They make some solid equipment.” “Apeks regulators will never disappoint you.”
Those are just some of the comments you’re sure to hear. Apeks equipment is trusted by everyone from the British military to Joe Average Diver. Apeks literally makes equipment for every condition.
So where does the Apeks XTX40 regulator fall on the spectrum? It’s certainly closer to Joe Average Diver than it is to James Bond but it’s by no means a bottom-of-the-line regulator.
Here’s some information on the Apeks XTX40:
Apeks XTX40 Overview
The Apeks XTX40 is a step above their XTX20 model and has several significant advantages over the XTX20 model.
The higher price (a little less than $500) means that you’re less likely to find the Apeks XTX40 in a dive shop rentals room, though there are some shops that keep as a high-quality alternative for more involved dives.
Like its little brother, the Apeks XTX40 can be modified in a right-handed or left-handed configuration and will occasionally be used as an octopus on premium regulator sets.
Apeks XTX40 Features
The Apeks XTX40 include standard features with a couple of nice upgrades. Here’s what I’m talking about:
The first stage includes 4 medium pressure ports for your second stage, octopus, BC inflator hoses and one more optional accessory.
The first stage is also fully balanced so you can breathe easy no matter how much air is left in your tank.
In addition, the first stage is environmentally sealed which makes maintenance easier since it keeps corrosive saltwater out of your regulator. It also makes the Apeks XTX40 more suitable for cold water diving than the Apeks XTX20.
The second stage is also pneumatically balanced and features a venturi control so you can control the amount of air your regulator gives you. It’s a great feature that can help you conserve air on easy dives or give you an extra boost for dives that require a bit more effort.
The Apeks XTX40 Regulator Who Should Buy It?
The Apeks XTX40 is still a beginner’s regulator, but it’s made for a more serious beginner than the XTX20.
This regulator is good for a new diver who wants to do more than 20 foot (6 meters) reef dives in Key Largo.
This regulator can stand much colder water than the tropical oceans most divers frequent.
The Apeks XTX40 is the regulator you should buy if you’re just starting out, but you plan on taking additional training to be able to dive to the recreational limit of 130 feet (40 meters) saltwater or if you want to dive waters that require something more substantial than a 3mm wetsuit.
So if the idea of diving the Duane and Bibb excites you more than John Pennekamp Park, you should seriously consider the Apeks XTX40 as your first regulator.
Of course, you’ll probably buy a more substantial regulator before diving the Duane and Bibb, but your XTX40 will make a great octopus for your new rig.
