Dive Computers, which is the best one for me?
Dive computers
“Which diving computer is the best?”
If I had a dollar for every time a student asked me that question, I wouldn’t be
running blogs for a living.
The problem is, that there is no single “best” anything. What’s best depends on your personal preferences and the type of diving you do. However there are some features that I consider necessary for all dive computers.
I can’t tell you which dive computer is the best, but what I can tell you is what features the best dive computer will have. No matter which dive computers you choose, it should have these five features:
Dive Computers - Nitrox Capable
Nitrox is the future of diving and I believe the day will come when it’s rare for a diver to use a 21% mixture.
Nitrox
can allow you to make longer dives without risking decompression sickness because there’s less nitrogen in the mix. At the very least, the best dive computer will be able to handle mixes between 21% and 50%.
Your dive computer doesn’t have to handle different mixes for one dive, but it should be able to handle different mixes on different dives.
Dive Computers - Dive Planning Capabilities
Let’s face it. Dive tables suck.
Still, you have to plan your dives to stay safe. The best dive computer will allow you to input your dive plan and help you plan your surface intervals and maximum depths.
Dive Computers - Downloadable Dive Information
It’s important to keep accurate records of your dives. Not only are these records a good way to remember your favorite diving spots, but they’re also proof of your diving experience. Should you decide to advance your education and learn more technical forms of diving, you’ll have to prove to your instructor that you have enough experience to handle the challenge. No one teaches full cave diving to a person fresh out of a basic dive class.
Dive Computers - Decompression Capable
This is more of a safety consideration than anything else. You should never attempt a decompression dive unless you’re properly trained. Of course, accidents can happen.
Some dive computers lock up when you exceed your maximum bottom time. That’s extremely unhelpful. Now you’re underwater in a potentially dangerous situation and you have no idea what to do.
A decompression capable dive computer, however, will simply display the depth you need to go to for decompression and tell you how long you need to stay there before you continue your ascent. You shouldn’t have gotten yourself into that mess in the first place, but it’s good to know your dive computer can get you out of it.
Dive Computers – Reliability
The best dive computer is made by a great company that stands behind their products. You don’t want a computer that fritzes out after a few dives.
All of the big name dive computer
manufacturers offer a warranty on their products because they know they’re built to last.
No warranty, no deal.
In addition, you should ask questions on forums and at your local dive shop as well as read review sites like this one. The best dive computer is certainly a reliable one.Integrated or Hoseless Dive Computers?Which is best?
