Mask Replacement Underwater

In the unlikely event of you having your mask knocked off, you will need to know how mask replacement underwater works.

There is nothing difficult about it, you just need to practice it, the more the better you will become.

How on earth would my mask ever come off underwater?

Not a bad question.

In all my diving years my scuba mask has only come off twice. Once because I took it off underwater and the second time it was knocked off by an extremely strong current, wrong place, wrong time....

But the point is it can happen and you need to be prepared for it, without your mask underwater you are literally blind.

How will you be able to read your gauges?

How will you know how long you have been underwater?

How will you know where your exit point is?

It is a good thing you know mask replacement underwater!

Mask replacement underwater - easy steps

If your diving mask does come off, this is what you should do to replace your mask underwater.

Step 1. - Organise Mask and Yourself
If your mask comes off your head it will more than likely be a shock. First thing to do is relax and get your breathing under control. Once you have settled down then arrange your mask so that it is not tangled in any way and is the right way round. All too often your strap can get tangled with your snorkel or you could try and put your mask on upside down, don't laugh I have seen it happen before.

Don't forget the snorkel goes on the left hand side, also use the nose pocket as a guide to which way the mask should be.
Step 2. - Place Mask on Face
Pretty easy, once you have your mask the right way round, fold the straps over the front of the mask. This will keep the straps out of the way. Now place your mask on your face, set it comfortably, then I like to pull the straps over my head and into position. This way I now have two free hands. Okay, your mask is now on, full of water I know, but it is on.
Step 3. - Clear any Obstructions
Now run your fingers around the skirt of the mask and make sure it is all smooth, if the skirt has buckled on your face, you will never be able to clear it of water. If there is a buckle it will be very easy to find and smooth if necessary.

you need to run your fingers along the skirt of the mask again. This time make sure your fingers make contact with the skin on your face and the skirt at the same time. What you are looking for here is to ensure no hair is between the skin on your face and the skirt of the mask, if you find any remove it. If you do not it will be like having a slow leaking tap on in your mask once you have cleared it.
Step 4. - Clear Water from Mask
This has been explained in great detail just click here to find out the easiest way to clear your mask.

Problems encountered when Replacing Mask Underwater

  • The first one is panicking. Without a doubt when your mask comes off and the cold water hits your face it can be a bit of a shock, but it is no big deal, you still have your regulator in so there are no problems.

  • Make sure your mask is untangled and the right way around before you try and put it on your face.

  • When your mask is on your face make sure nothing obstructs the skirt of your mask, otherwise water will keep flowing in and you will never clear it.

  • That's it, nothing to it really, just practice and more practice.
