Neoprene Gloves I love them do you use them?

Neoprene GlovesBelieve it or not, neoprene gloves are controversial among dive instructors. In fact, some instructors will forbid their students to wear neoprene gloves while they’re taking lessons (unless, of course, they’re diving in very cold water).

The reason these warm water instructors are so adamant about keeping their students away from gloves is because they think the students will be more likely to touch the coral reefs if their hands are protected.

Personally I think it’s better to just tell the students not to touch the coral. Those that don’t listen will quickly learn their lesson when they put their hands on fire coral (which I conveniently fail to describe in my classes).

Controversy aside, however, neoprene gloves are a great accessory to have for a number of reasons.

Neoprene Gloves - Protect Your Hands

Neoprene Gloves for Warm Water The major benefit of neoprene dive gloves is that they protect your hands.

If you dive long enough, you will touch coral by accident.

Fire coral in particular has a nasty habit of getting in your way. All it takes is one light bump and your hands start to burn. Neoprene gloves will protect you from these accidental stings.

Gloves protect you from scrapes as well. If you ever dive a shipwreck, you’ll want to make sure you have a good set of neoprene gloves.

As ships decay they become covered with sharp, jagged edges and you’ll occasionally have to touch the ship to move something out of your way or pull yourself along a corridor to prevent silting it up.

If you’re not wearing gloves, the wreck will shred your hands quicker than you can say “Titanic.”

Neoprene Gloves - Keep You Warm

Neoprene Gloves for Cold Water You may not think it, but neoprene gloves go a long way towards keeping you warm.

Your body can lose a lot of heat through its extremities, so keeping them warm will keep you warm.

If your hand gets too cold your body with slow the flow of blood to them which leads me to my next benefit of gloves…

Neoprene Gloves - Improve Manual Dexterity

When you body slows the flow of blood to your hands, it reduces your ability to grasp and manipulate objects. You’ll fumble with line and drop objects you’re trying to handle.

With gloves, however, your hands will stay warm and you’ll be able to handle objects more easily.

This benefit seems counterintuitive because you would think that gloves would reduce your manual dexterity as well, however the small loss in dexterity you’ll experience from wearing gloves is nothing compared to the huge loss in dexterity you’ll experience from having cold hands.

Neoprene gloves are a good item to have on every dive. The ocean is filled with stinging creatures and sharp edges.

Neoprene gloves will protect you from both of those things. In addition, neoprene gloves will help to keep your hands warm when the water temperature is low. Keeping your hands warm will increase your manual dexterity and help keep your whole body warm when combined with a good wetsuit.
