OMS Scuba Equipment for precise scuba equipment
OMS Scuba Equipment or Ocean Management Systems, (OMS) was founded in 1991 and has quickly become the equipment of choice for technical divers.
The guys at OMS don’t even make equipment for the average diver. If you’re not a technical diver, you can skip over this article because none of the equipment will be of any use to you. However if you’re a technical diver – prepare to enter paradise.
OMS Scuba Equipment - Regulators
OMS makes serious regulators that can handle extreme situations. These regulators are built to handle temperatures approaching freezing and depths that test the limits of human capabilities.
Here are some examples of the regulators that OMS offers.
Workhorse
The name says it all. This regulator isn’t made to do 250 foot (75 m) dives in 35 degree F (1 degree C) water. The Workhorse is an unbalanced, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t do serious dives. This regulator was used on a 190 foot (58m) dive by the National Park Services to dive down to a B-29 bomber in Lake Mead.
R250
This is a high performance regulator that uses a balanced first stage with a diaphragm that’s environmentally sealed to prevent your first stage from getting clogged with gunk. The second stage is pneumatically balanced and uses a venturi assist to give you an easy breath of air every time you inhale.
Deep Performance
Are you looking for a regulator that can perform well at 329 feet (100 m)saltwater? This regulator is tried and true at depths that few people have seen. In addition, it beat out many similar regulators in performance tests. If you’re looking for a regulator that can handle next to anything, this is it.
OMS Scuba Equipment - Buoyancy Compensators
OMS doesn’t offer any ready-made buoyancy compensators, but they do have an insanely popular “build your own BC” program.
BC Wings OMS makes a range of BC wings that you can use in conjunction with an OMS backplate or harness to build your BC.
These wings have between 45 to 94 pounds (20 – 40 kg) of lift and a redundant inflation system with two corrugated hoses.
Do you plan on diving in noxious chemicals? OMS makes a BC for that. The BC is designed to resist chemicals in the water.
Harnesses There are two basic types of harnesses: Hard plates and soft plates. OMS has them both.
Of course, soft plates are a lot more comfortable, but hard plates are more durable and better able to handle the heavy load of dual scuba cylinders.
The harness you choose will depend on your personal preferences and the type of diving your want to do.
OMS Scuba Equipment - Other Equipment
If it’s a technical piece of equipment, OMS has it. They offer everything from serious dive lights (the kind you have to strap to your tank) to regular dive masks.
In addition, OMS has an assortment of pockets and pouches to help you build the buoyancy compensator that you’ve always wanted.
OMS isn’t a manufacturer for everyone. Most divers will never need any of the products that OMS offers.
But for few divers who want to venture beyond the normal boundaries of diving, OMS is an equipment manufacturer that deserves your attention.
