Buying Prescription Dive Masks
“It’s about time you bought some prescription dive masks” I said to my buddy. He had to deal with wearing contacts underwater.
Every time he cleared his mask, you could see him tense up and I’m sure it was of a deep fear that he will lose a contact to the ocean.
I have seen other divers wear glasses underneath their masks, but that doesn’t look comfortable at all. Their dive mask is constantly leaking and it seems like they clear it every ten seconds.
There is another option a way that you can dive without flooding your mask, without risking your contacts and without diving blind.
You can have a prescription dive mask made.
Don’t worry about how “bad” your prescription is. Most companies make prescription lenses in a wide range of diopters.
I heard of a company that said their record for the strongest prescription was -27 diopters. I didn’t even know that was possible!
Do you have Astigmatism or Biofocals do you need Biofocals?
With technological advancements, prescription dive masks can be made for any need.
Do you have astigmatism? No problem.
Do you need bifocals? They make prescription dive masks for that as well.
You can even get trifocals if you need them!
In addition, most companies will allow you to choose where you want the different focal points on your mask to be.
It’s not as expense as you might think. Prescription dive masks cost about as much as getting glasses. In fact, you can have prescription lenses put in just about any dive mask.
Okay what about the restrictions to having Prescription Dive Masks?
There are, of course, some restrictions.
Generally, you won’t be able to put prescription lenses in a mask that has only one lens unless you’re willing to pay a premium and you’ll need to choose a mask that can have its lenses easily removed. After that, all you have to do is hand your prescription to the dive shop attendant and wait for your mask to arrive.
However I wouldn’t worry too much about the restrictions.
If you look long enough, you’ll find a mask in the exact style you want that is compatible with prescription lenses. You can even get the specialty masks such as Sea Vision that enhance the colors underwater with prescription lenses!
Let’s face it: The ocean is a hazardous place for people who wear contact lenses.
Every time you dive you risk losing one and losing a contact makes the drive home much more difficult. Prescription dive masks are the answer to your problems.
You’ll be able to see clearly underwater and clear your mask at will.
You’ll no longer have to spend a minute at the surface to get your contacts acclimated to the water.
You’ll not longer stay two body lengths behind the nearest diver for fear of fin kicks. You’ll be much more comfortable in the water.
