Scuba Certification have you asked the following of your dive instructor?

Scuba Certification

Scuba diving is sort of a rarity among sports.

Most people enter a sport with at least a cursory knowledge of how it works and the equipment involved. By contrast, most beginning divers begin their journey knowing absolutely nothing about what they’re getting into.

Some new divers aren’t even sure if they’re going to like it!

This lack of knowledge makes it important that potential divers find the best dive instructor that they can when it’s time to get certified. You need an instructor who can teach you what you need to know without passing on any biases.

You need an instructor who will teach you about dive equipment and help you chose the best gear for you without trying to sell you an expensive piece of equipment with a bunch of features that you don’t need.

And above all, you need someone you can trust.

Here are some things to look for when you’re trying to find a dive instructor:

Do You Mesh Well?

Do you get along well with your potential dive instructor?

It doesn’t matter how good of a teacher your instructor is; if you don’t get along with your instructor, you’re not going to enjoy your class.

Take some time to talk with your potential instructor and ask questions

Scuba Certification - Is He/She Experienced?

How long has your potential instructor been diving?

How long has your instructor been teaching the sport? How many classes has your instructor taught?

What kind of classes has he or she taught?

All of these questions will help you ascertain you’re potential instructor’s level of competence.

Scuba Certification - What Kind Of Diving Does Your Potential Instructor Like To Do?

Your instructor’s diving preferences are going to show throughout the course. I used to teach with a guy who was an avid spear fisherman and lobster hunter.

He related everything in his classes to spear fishing. If you’re not interested in catching your own fish with a gun, you would probably find his class boring.

Scuba Certification - What Other Classes Will Your Instructor Be Teaching?

Is your instructor certified to teach courses in nitrox?

How about advanced diving? You want an instructor that teaches several different classes so you can further your diving education.

Your potential instructor doesn’t need to teach everything, but they should teach Nitrox and advanced diving in addition to the basic course.

Scuba Certification - How Does Your Instructor Talk About Different Brands Of Equipment?

Is your potential instructor objective when you ask about different brands of dive equipment, or does he bash any brand that he doesn’t carry?

An objective instructor is more likely to provide you with the facts and help you get into a set of gear that will be right for you. An instructor who bashes gear that he doesn’t sell probably only wants to get you into a set of gear that will give him a good commission.

Take some time to talk to potential instructors when it’s time to get your Basic Scuba certification.
