Scuba Equipment is the most significant investment you’ll ever make in the sport of diving.
Once your diving equipment is purchased, air fills and dives are relatively cheap.
But then there is that $2 - $3,000 investment to make. Fortunately there are ways to get high quality equipment for less than retail prices. You just have to know how to hunt down the scuba diving equipment sales.
Here’s how to do it.
Join Your Dive Shop’s Mailing List
Not many people know that many of the more prestigious brands of dive equipment limit how much a dive shop can discount their equipment. For example, if a dive shop offers a ScubaPro regulator at a greater discount than ScubaPro allows them to offer, they risk losing the brand.
However, dive shops do periodically run specials on equipment that’s far below retail.
Equipment manufacturers will occasionally send dive shops special deals that are way below their usual wholesale prices. Shops can then offer great deals on these pieces of equipment.
You want to be on the shop’s mailing list so you can find out when the good scuba diving equipment sales are available.
Get To Know Your Dive Shop Owner
People who become friends of the dive shop owner often get what I call “private sales.”
Sometimes the people who represent the equipment brand you’re trying to buy can be persuaded to give special deals that the company usually doesn’t advertise. You usually have to buy some sort of package or be buying a high-end piece of equipment to get these deals but if you’re in the market for a whole set of equipment, this could save you hundreds!
Going Out Of Business Sales
This is the only time I advocate buying from someone other than your local dive shop owner.
Many people open a dive shop because they love diving and think that running a shop would be fun. Some of these people have no business sense and their shops soon fail.
When that happens, they often sell their inventory at a huge discount. Sometimes the prices are barely over wholesale. You won’t find these sales often, but when you do you can get a full set of high-quality gear for a third of what you’d usually pay.
No one could pass up a deal like that! Your local dive shop owner will forgive your little indiscretion.
Closeout Sales
Every once in a while dive shops will have “tent sales” or something similar where they discount items they’re no longer going to carry.
When this happens, you have the chance to pick up some equipment at a 30 – 50% discount. Be on the lookout for these and ask your local dive shop if they’re thinking about doing one anytime soon.
Dive equipment can be expensive, but fortunately there are ways for you to get great scuba diving equipment sales for less than retail price.
Just remember that the dive industry is more of a community than most other industries. Before you start shopping around, talk to your local dive shop owner and let them know what you’re looking for.
You could be rewarded with a deal better than anything you could find in some dive superstore.
