When we discuss scuba equipment manufactureres this is what usually happens;
“Look at all this stuff! What would you say is the best scuba equipment you have?” That’s what new divers would say to me as soon as they walked in the dive shop.
There are lots of dive equipment manufacturers out there and all new students want to know who the “best” is.
The truth is that there’s no single scuba equipment manufacturer that’s the best at everything. Each company has their own niche and their own group of freakishly loyal divers that will say the company is “the best” and will defend that statement with their dying breath.
You’ll have to find your favorite manufacturer through a process of trial and error. A good place to start is your local dive shop. After all, you want to make sure your equipment is easy to service and it’s not so easy driving 50 miles (80km) to some other shop every time your equipment has a problem.
Here’s a list of brands you’re likely to encounter and a little info about each one. See if you can pick up on my personal favorites.
Scubapro has a great reputation and a customer service department that’s second to none. A notable fact about this brand is that they’ll give you free parts for life as long as you get your equipment serviced annually (which you should anyway and I’m sure you do).

Mares likes to stay on the cutting edge of diving products, but that doesn’t mean they forget about the basics. The Mares Quattro diving fin has been an industry favorite for as long as I can remember.

I’ve gotta say that Zeagle makes the best buoyancy compensator that I’ve ever used. Their BCs are durable and they give you a lot of lift when you need it.

I wouldn’t dare buy any other dive computer. Suunto makes the best dive computers you can buy. Whether you’re looking for air integrated computers or wrist mounted computers, Suunto has what you need.
Apeks regulators are trusted by technical divers all over the world. In addition, the Apeks TX100 has the distinction of being the first regulator to cross the 1,000 foot (305 m) mark.
Dacor was started by two brothers who loved to snorkel. As the brand matured, so did its product line. Today Dacor is one of the largest manufacturers of dive equipment in the industry.

Sherwood regulators are a favorite of dive shop rental departments because of their reliability. These things are work horses that can stand heavy use year in and year out without fail.
OMS is one of those companies that have a freakishly loyal following. They have a reputation for making high quality technical equipment. Their “build your own BC” program is particularly popular with techies.
Dive Rite is another scuba equipment manufacturer of technical diving equipment that has a cult-like following. My cave diving instructor was one of them.
He refuses to take anyone into the water if they weren’t wearing Dive Rite gear.
Uwatec are best known for their scuba diving computers. In fact they were so good at it Scubapro bought them, so they are now the dive computer arm of Scubapro.
Every brand has its own unique strengths to offer and each one has divers that swear the brand is the best.
Check out your local dive shop to see what they offer. Most shops will have some sort of try-before-you-buy program so you can find which scuba equipment manufacturers are the “best” for you.
