At first this is a skill that most people find uncomfortable, but it is extremely important and best of all it is extremely easy!
But why do I need to clear my Diving Mask?
Your going underwater, right?
In fact your surrounding yourself with water, aren't you?
So the chances of you
getting water into your diving mask are, well, pretty high I would say. You may even want to put some water in your mask if it has fogged up.
If you do accidentally or even if you on purpose get water into your scuba mask, you
will want to know how to clear it. I would hate to have water stuck in my mask for the duration of my dive, it would drive me
crazy!
Scuba mask clearing is easy, this is what you do.
Scuba Mask Clearing - 4 Easy Steps
Scuba mask clearing is a skill that is learned and it may take a few goes to get it right. Once you have mastered it,
you will never forget it, it will become second nature to you.
Step 1. - Practice in a Pool You need to get use to the water on your face and the best place to do this is in a swimming pool, it is easy to get in and out of and there is no surge from the ocean to distract you. Put your scuba gear on and enter the swimming pool.
Step 2. - Place your Mask and Face in the Water Kind of obvious I know.
Let paint the picture for you, your now in the
swimming pool and are kneeling in the shallow end, blowing bubbles happily.
Step 3. - Allow a Little Water to Enter your Mask If you are going to have a problem this is where you will have it and it is so easy to avoid.
Be
aware of two things right now, are you listening this is important, firstly the water is going to be cold on your
face, let me repeat that, the water is going to be cold on your face, it will not hurt you, but it may be a shock at first, but it is nothing to worry about, it is only cold water, right? The second thing is to make sure when you let the water into your scuba mask that you only let in a little bit at a time, until it comes to just under your eyes. By doing it this way, you will slowly get use to it, not only the cold water but water in general on your face. You do not want to pull the mask away from your face and flood your mask in one go, not for your first attempt anyway, if you do you will more than likely panic, not only will you have cold water on you face for the first time, but you will get water into your eyes and you will not be able to see.
Lets let the water in. Break the seal of the mask just enough to allow a small amount of water in, so that it comes to just under your eyes.
You now have a small amount of your mask filled with water, you can see it because it has come to just under your eyes, just how you planned it! Well done!
Step 4. - Clear the Water from your Mask The first thing to do is to look up whilst pushing in the top of your mask, that's right look to the surface. By pushing in the top of your mask you are holding it nice and tight so it will not move. This would have to be the most common problem people make when attempting to clear there mask, they do not look up.
At the same time you need to exhale through you nose, not your mouth, but your nose!
This is the second most common mistake people make they try to exhale through there mouth and not there nose.
What will happen now is, the air will come out of your nose, because you are exhaling through your nose and not your mouth, the air will go up your mask, because you are looking up and will get trapped at the top, why will get trapped and simply not leave your mask, because you are holding the top of your mask with your hand. The air you are exhaling has nowhere to go except to fill up your mask and force the water out the bottom of your scuba mask. Presto! All the water is gone! How easy is that!
Scuba Mask Cleared!
Perfecting this requires practice, start off with small amounts of water and as your confidence grows you can add more and more until you can completely flood your mask, just keep following the above steps.
When you completely flood your mask make sure you do not have contacts in, because as soon as you open your eyes they will be gone. Get use to opening your eyes underwater it is good practice.
One last and important thing, don't forget to keep breathing through your regulator, your regulator is your friend.......
