Scuba Mask understand it and it will be your friend.

The scuba mask would have to be one of the most important pieces of scuba equipment.

It allows you to see underwater, so how important is that! Pretty important if you ask me.

We all know what happens when we open our eyes underwater, everything is blurry, the best you can do is see hazy images, at worst you will not make anything out at all. Our eyes were designed to see through the air not the more dense water.

So what do we do about it?

Well we take some air with us and I don't mean the stuff we have in out scuba tanks on our backs either. The air we take is captured between our face and our scuba mask, this air inside our scuba mask gives us the opportunity to see what the underwater world is all about and it is imperssive, a whole new adventure waiting just for you.

Scuba Mask Construction

The scuba mask has changed a lot over the years, technology has been kind to divers.

Divers today get lightweight plastic with soft and plyable silicone masks.

The actual lenses are tempered glass and depending on the type of scuba mask you have will depend on whether that lense is two separate lenses or one complete lense. For those of you who wear glasses, you are fully accommodated as well, no excuses not to dive, prescription lenses are extremely common.

The nose pocket of your scuba mask is also a very soft silicone to allow you to grab and pinch your nose through the mask and equalise as needed.

The straps that hold your scuba mask onto your face are also silicone. the strap is split in two pieces to allow the strap to comfortable fit over the crown of your head and provides a firm fit.

The straps are attached to the scuba mask by a buckle and are completely adjustable as we all have different size heads.

Now once you have purchased your scuba mask, here is how you maintain and care for it, also if you want to know how to defog your diving mask.

Scuba Mask Features

Scuba Mask Twin Skirt A lot of what a scuba mask has to offer comes down to personal preference, but there are a few must have features and if the mask you are looking at does not have them, then find one that does.

  • Nose Pocket
I'm yet to find a modern mask whiah does not have a nose pocket, anyway the nose pocket allows you to pinch your nose or block it with your fingers so that you can equalise the air spaces or pressure in your head. Without the nose pocket equalisation would be impossible and diving kind of non-existant.

  • Low Volume
By having a low volume scuba mask, you are giving yourself a smaller air space between your face and the scuba mask. The main benefit here is that it is easier to remove any water that may have entered the scuba mask underwater.

  • Soft Silicone Skirt
The silicone skirt is the pasrt of the scuba mask that attaches to your face. There are two important features here. The first is that it is nice and soft and very flexible, this helps the skirt match the contours of your face. The more snug the fit the less water that will enter. The second important feature is that the skirt has a second seal on the inside, effectivley being a backup, most important.
