Suunto; have you checked there range out yet?

Suunto isn’t just a big name in scuba diving; it’s a big name in hiking, skiing, sailing and golfing. These people are outdoor geniuses!

While Suunto may not specialize in a particular sport, they do specialize in a particular product. You won’t find Suunto regulators or buoyancy compensators and there are no Suunto golf clubs or hiking shoes. These guys make computers and they do a damn good job of it.

True, Suunto does make a couple of pressure gauges, depth gauges and compasses; but the heart of the company lies in high-quality electronics.

What are the Suunto Product Lines?

The Suunto product line includes air integrated gauges, that not only tell you your current depth and how much air you have left in your tank, they’ll also tell you how long you have until your dive becomes a decompression dive.

The gauge will also tell you how much longer your tank will last given your current depth and breathing rate. If you slow your breathing rate down, your “time-til-empty” increases.

Suunto also offers a selection of dive computers that are slightly bigger than a wrist watch and have truly staggering abilities. Do you want a dive computer that will keep track of your depth and dive time? They’ve got one.

How about a computer that can act as a digital compass? They’ve got one of those too.

How about a computer that can switch between different gasses mid-dive? Yep. Suunto makes those too.

Suunto offers everything you could possibly want in a dive computer and more.

Here’s some information about the company:

Suunto History

Suunto’s beginnings weren’t in the diving realm. The company was started in 1936 by a man who was looking to build a better compass. Tuomas Vohlonen was bothered by the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and sought to build a better product. He succeeded and by 1950 he was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world.

Next, Vohlonen turned his attention to making a better marine compass and in 1953 the Suunto K-12 made its debut.

Suunto’s entry into the diving market happened by accident. Sports divers found out that Suunto compasses worked well underwater, so they started attaching them to their wrists. Suunto got wind of the practice and in the 1960s they launched their first diving compass.

It wasn’t until 1987, however, that Suunto found its calling. The invention of microcircuits that could hold algorithms that automatically calculated a diver’s decompression status was the catalysis that made Suunto the electronics giant that it is today.

Suunto’s Claim to Fame

The torches that lit the Olympic flames at Helsinki in 1952 were made by Suunto. That’s a great factoid, but Suunto’s real claim to fame is their dive computers. These computers are second to none.

Most dive manufacturers make a variety of products ranging from regulators to dive fins, but Suunto only makes one thing – dive computers. And they are the best in the world at what they do.

Every serious diver needs a good dive computers and no one makes better computers than Suunto.

Go down to your local dive shop and check one out. I guarantee you’ll be impressed.
